This position is located in Manassas, VA. Candidate must be within commuting distance or willing to relocate.

 

Overview:

 

The Additive Manufacturing Technician will join RapidFlight’s growing technician team, and will work closely with our Engineering, R&D, and Prototyping groups as part of a world-class aircraft design team. In this role, you will be responsible for day-to-day operations of a 3D printer cluster/farm with no less than 10 FDM printers.

 

As an Additive Manufacturing Technician, you will manage, operate, and maintain FDM type 3D printers in your area of responsibility. You will also be responsible for providing status on the availability of these machines on a regular basis, and initiate call to action for any repairs or modifications necessary to assure overall cluster/farm operations. You will be in charge of, and be responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of consumables (such as material filaments, resins, etc.) and spares (e.g. hot ends, nozzles, etc.) needed to keep the printer cluster operational.

Because additive manufacturing is a quickly developing technology, we expect the additive manufacturing technicians to increase their awareness and expertise of additive manufacturing technologies, material choices, as well as related software suites. Furthermore, you will be given the opportunity to learn and perform other prototyping and testing work and be invited to learn from other experts in the company. These opportunities may include CNC machining, composites lamination, bonding, jigging, welding, testing of material and assemblies and broad exposure to aircraft development and operations.

Additive Manufacturing Technician is a key contributor to the broad efforts of the engineering and design teams. As such, our teams rely on the additive manufacturing technicians to advocate for software and equipment updates, improvements, and process changes to best meet the demands of the business and continue innovation within this core discipline.

Qualified applicants must be able to demonstrate competency in 3D printing using FFF/FDM process and have familiarity with commonly used plastic filaments, as well as their proper printing parameters in terms of speeds, temperatures, etc. During the on-site interview, candidates will be asked to slice a given 3D model, and print it on a commercially available 3D printer using a filament type other than PLA. The printer provided during the interview process will require troubleshooting to get it working properly. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their ability to troubleshoot the printer prior to operating it.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Day to day operation of 3D printers in a printer cluster/farm to deliver high quality 3D printed pars.
Provide maintenance, and care of the equipment to ensure availability.
Own print jobs by scheduling them, keeping track of start and finish times, recording outcomes.
Troubleshoot and debug equipment that need repair or maintenance to maintain machine efficiency and use rate.
Maintain and stock consumables related to the print farm
Help in other prototyping & testing efforts within the R&D shop
Provide Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) feedback to the design engineers designing the products
Prepare 3D models provided by engineering and slice them using commercial slicing software
Record, keep, and report on the print jobs processed thru the printer cluster.
Record, keep, and report on printer maintenance activities on a weekly basis.

 

Need to Have:

 

Hands-on work-with-your-hands aptitude and “figure-it-out” attitude
High School Diploma/GED with vocational electives taken
Must be able to lift a 3D printer weighing 40 lbs and move it from one bench to another.

 

Nice to Have:

 

Professional experience in an R&D, Prototyping environment, Aerospace a plus.
Experience with a wide range of Additive Manufacturing methods and materials.
