Position: Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist

  • This is an at-will, full-time, salaried, exempt position
  • This role works across all of NanoAl’s advanced aluminum alloy technologies including Addalloy® aluminum powder for metal Additive Manufacturing (AM)
  • The Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist reports to the CEO, NanoAL (VP Technology, Unity Aluminum)

Role Summary

NanoAl is seeking a highly motivated individual for a full-time Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist position. The candidate will report to, and work closely with, NanoAl’s chief technologist and CEO. The primary responsibility is the development of novel aluminum materials and processes that will scale to targeted markets and applications. This role is a leadership position within the Research and Development team. The position requires planning and execution of R&D projects, involving design, development, and optimization of new aluminum alloys for specific applications. The work includes scientifically designing alloy compositions and heat treatments, fabricating and characterizing prototype materials utilizing advanced instruments, assisting scale-up process of the developed materials at manufacturing plants, and helping to qualify new products in the target application space. The working location is in the greater Boston area (Ashland, MA).

Essential Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist include:

  • Research, design, and execute experiments for novel aluminum alloy technologies and processes.
  • Perform characterization on samples and prototypes generated through experiments using NanoAl laboratory equipment.
  • Identify and coordinate with external partners for supplementary characterization techniques.
  • Develop close relationships with developmental partners and provide timely technical assistance through phone calls, emails, and visits to partner locations.
  • Relate experimental results to application design requirements and make necessary composition and process adjustments to meet targets.
  • Supervise and Coach team members on scientific theories, application of experimental and characterization techniques, and program management skills
  • Write, and participate in the writing of, grant applications, development agreements, test plans.
    Provide technical marketing insights regarding competitors, adjacent technologies, and observations of market forces.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as necessary



  • USA Person status with either Green Card or United States Citizenship
  • Degreed Material Scientist/Engineer, Metallurgical Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer with:
    • A B.S./M.S. degree, supplemented by strong, hands-on research experience.
    • A Ph.D. degree in an associated field with post-doctoral experience
  • Knowledge of phase diagrams, solid-state kinetics, metallic alloys, heat treatments, basic metallurgy, and process capabilities, specifically as they pertain to aluminum alloys and their manufacturing processes.
  • Experience conducting and analyzing results of mechanical testing including tensile testing, hardness, fatigue, and creep.
  • Experience conducting and analyzing results from conventional and advanced metallographic characterization tools including optical microscopy, OES, SEM, EDS, and TEM.
  • Plus: Experience with additive manufacturing techniques used with metal alloys.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills; ability to write logical, structured, and persuasive reports of the experiments and investigations.
    • Author or co-author of peer-reviewed journal publications is preferred.
  • Excellent process, data analytical, observational, and computer/computational skills
  • Ability to work safely and maintain productivity in a fast-paced laboratory research and industrial setting.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to effectively operate and problem solve based on limited information/experience when necessary.
  • Flexibility to adapt or change assignments based on dynamic market applications and rapidly evolving technologies.
  • Ability to function and thrive in early-stage and start-up environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry items that weigh up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, crouch, bend, and twist as need to accomplish tasks normal to the position.
  • Capable of and willing to wear/utilize personal protective equipment as required by company policy. This may include, but is not limited to, safety glasses with side shields, face shield, gloves, safety footwear, respiratory protection, hearing protection, lab coat, and others.
  • Observational, process, data analytical, computer, and technical report writing skills necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist.
  • Manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist.
  • Optical acuity necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Senior Materials Engineer/Scientist.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass initial and periodic drug screening.
  • Participate in NanoAl’s Personnel Surety Program.
  • Ability and means to travel for company business in Massachusetts and other local areas including to and from company premises.
  • Able and willing to fly on passenger aircraft as needed for domestic and international business travel, up to 10% of time.
  • Able to perform extended business travel (greater than 1 week duration) as required.
