3D Printed Composites for High Performance Applications

Summary of Position:

As a Mechanical Engineer II, you will be directly responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing of subsystems within Fortify’s 3D printers. You will interface with a highly interdisciplinary team to help integrate electrical, embedded, and materials disciplines into a seamlessly integrated system. A Mechanical Engineer II should expect to own the designs of subsystems involving motors and moving parts, heat transfer and fluid dynamics. As Fortify nears production of our first generally available product line, a Mechanical Engineer will play an important role in design for manufacturing, design for reliability, long-term life testing, and documentation necessary for a successful transition to production.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Design mechanical subsystems for Fortify’s Flux series of printers
Own late stage design for manufacturing and cost savings
Test and validate design performance to ensure system reliability in the field
Generate documentation such as drawings, assembly instructions, and test reports
Contribute regularly to system design brainstorms & design reviews


Required qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional experience designing mechanical systems
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Can present a strong portfolio of mechanical design, prototyping and testing experience
  • Basic knowledge of systems engineering
  • Strong communication skills and work ethic

Experience with:

  • CAD: Master modeling
  • DFM for sheet metal, machining
  • Generating engineering drawings for manufacturing
  • Mechanical FEA
  • Design of small to medium assemblies
  • Data-driven design approaches
  • Designing products for user experience

Highly desirable additional skills:

  • Basic firmware coding capabilities in C++ to test electromechanical systems and gather data
  • Understanding of electromechanical systems
  • Experience with PLM systems
  • GD&T
  • Thermal FEA and CFD
  • Managing development timelines and risks
