Academy of Art University seeks a full-time Jewelry & Metal Arts Lead Technician to support the School of Jewelry & Metal Arts.

Talented and creative wood, industrial arts, and metal shop artists are welcome to apply for this opportunity. Our Lead Shop Technicians work directly with students, faculty, and staff on a variety of matters that ensure efficient and effective utilization of resources within the University’s equipment facilities and shop spaces. Work in a creative traditional hands-on studio environment in support of our students’ life cycle of projects.


Responsibilities include:

  • Train and provide for the safety of all students using the Jewelry and Metal Arts studios and shops.
    Provide assistance to diverse student body as well as faculty.
  • Monitor Safety in Jewelry and Metal Arts studios and shops, and communicate with instructors and Shop Manager regarding any safety concerns.
  • Maintain and update all OSHA / HAZMAT documents pertaining to the Jewelry and Metal Arts studios.
  • Attend safety meetings pertaining to the Jewelry and Metal Arts Department and the University at large.
  • Perform general maintenance, simple construction and fabrication as assigned.
  • Issue and recover tools for students and instructors.
  • Clean, repair, and maintain all tools and machinery.
  • Regularly inventory shop tools and supplies.
  • Monitor receiving area and distribute all packages.
  • Perform special projects and assist with other tasks as required or assigned.


Must have working knowledge of a variety of jewelry fabrication tools, techniques and equipment, including, but not limited to:

  • Previous jewelry and metal arts experience required.
  • Soldering, finishing, wax working, lost wax casting, and stone setting.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills and be safety-minded at all times.
  • Must have a friendly and patient personality and enjoy working with a diverse student population.
  • Must be able to consistently lift up to 70lbs.
  • Experience with metal, wood shop, and ceramic equipment a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative suite, and Rhino 3D modeling software is a plus.
